What’s the first thing that comes to your mind on a Friday?

Eating outside?

Then you are like thousands of others who are on the same page the moment they enter the last half of Fridays.

In fact, the eating outside is seeing a twist these days. It is now becoming, “let’s order from outside”, these days. Thanks to the traffic woes on Friday evenings, lack of parking and the pain of finding seats in a good and affordable restaurant.

I still remember, the questionaires that I used to fill when applying for a credit card, a few years back. One of the questions used to be, “How many times do you eat outside in a month?”.

And the options would be –

1). 0-1

2). 1-2

3). more than 2

These days, nobody asks that question. Because they know that these days the number of times we would eat from outside is more than the number of times we eat home-cooked food, in most cases.

And this change is a habit is driven by none other than our friendly own smartphones and those delivery apps out there.

When we moved into this new house, there weren’t many decent restaurants nearby. And nobody delivered food to our apartment premises. Delivery wasn’t available at all.

The pain of having to drive out on a weekend was too much for us. And that meant there was no excuse to go out and eat. So it was home cooked food for us.

Then one day we saw a food delivery guy near our apartment.

We were quick to install the app and check. Indeed, they were delivering to our area. But there weren’t a lot of choices available in terms of restaurants or, the menu.

We still went ahead and ordered from whatever was available.

And then started the habit of ordering food from outside.

About a week back during the course of a discussion, when we pondered over what we were eating we suddenly realized that in most cases, we weren’t really ordering food with a menu in mind.

In fact, we were being driven by the food delivery app. What to eat was decided on the basis of what was available, discounts etc.

Yes, that’s true. We were no more eating what we want. We were instead eating what the food delivery apps wanted us to eat.

We were being controlled to such an extent that we even stopped evaluating things like what we were eating, how hygenic it is, who is cooking it and how are the kitchens.

These food delivery apps were controlling our food habits, not just what we eat but also when and how we eat.

We still have time. It isn’t too late to stop, think and review.

Let us not completely handover everything to technology, at least not our food.

Onto this week’s recipe.
