Have you ever wondered as to how many learnings are hidden in those mythological stories?
I know. We don’t really care about the learnings. All that matters is the stories.
Hence, since we are on the topic of stories, let me tell you a story.
In Hinduism, we ensure that we drop a Tulsi leaf on any Prasada that is offered to Lord Vishnu and his avatars. In fact, we were taught to do that.
And we followed it all these years but never went back and checked the reason why we do it.
Some time back, while I was pondering on this I felt I should go back and ask my mom about this. And that’s when I got to know about this story.
So onto the story.
Tulsi, in her earlier birth, was a girl named Vrinda, who was an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu. She ensured that she worshipped her ishtdev (Vishnu) every day with all her devotion.
When she grew up, she got married to a Daanav Raj (king of demons) names Jalandhar. He was known to be a warrior, but his secret lied in the Chastity and virtuousness of his wife because of which he was unconquerable.
All the devatas were tired of this and feared Jalandhar who kept troubling and pestering them.
During one such war with the Devatas, Jaladhar wreaked havoc. Vrinda sat on a puja praying for her husband’s victory and took an oath that she will remain in the Puja until her husband comes back victorious.
Jalandhar was undefeatable.
Seeing no other option, all the Devatas went to Lord Vishnu and sought his help.
But when Lord Vishnu got to know that Vrinda is Jalandhar’s wife, he refused any help saying that she was his devotee and hence he cannot harm her.
The Devatas persisted with their request and pleaded for his help.
Eventually, Lord Vishnu agreed.
He took the form of Jalandhar and appeared in front of Vrinda. Vrinda, seeing her husband got up from her puja, thus breaking her oath and came and touched his feet.
With both the oath broken and her chastity lost because she touched the feet of another man, Jalandhar got defeated and the devatas cut her head.
His cut head came and fell on the feet of Lord Vishnu. Seeing this Vrinda was shocked.
She was surprised to see her husband’s head lying at the feet of another person who looked exactly like her husband.
At that point, Lord Vishnu took it original form.
Vrinda was sad and upset. In the rage, she cursed Lord Vishnu to turn to a stone.
Seeing this, the devatas came to Vrinda and pleaded forgiveness.
Finally, Vrinda forgave them and Lord Vishnu and took back her curse.
But in order to ensure that her curse is also kept, Lord Vishnu turned himself into another form, that of a stone. This form is worshipped as Lord Shaligram.
Lord Vishnu then turned to Vrinda and told her that, in her next birth she will be born as Tulsi and she will be dearer to him, much more than even Lakshmi, his wife.
He said that her place will be on his head (signifying the importance of her place).
And that is why a Tulsi leaf is dropped onto every prasad that is offered to Lord Vishnu and his avatara.
Interesting. Isn’t it?
Something that I have often seen in most of these mythological stories is that all of the gods love their Bhakts equally, irrespective of their creed.
And it is hence that Asuras (Demons), Maanava (human) and even Devtaas are all bhakts of the Lord and they are all loved equally without any discrimination.
At the same time, when they see adharma (injustice) happening, they don’t spare anybody irrespective of where they come from.
Isn’t that valuable learning for us?
Don’t discriminate and love everybody equally.
At the same time, if you see something that is not right, then don’t favor them because they are your loved ones. Call out what is not right and support the truth.
On that note, let us get onto today’s recipe…
Eggless Banana Pancake Recipe – How to Make Pancake Without Baking Powder
Eggless Banana Pancake Recipe is one of the easiest recipes you can make for breakfast and for kid’s lunch box. Since this recipe does not contain baking soda hence it is super healthy and can be made in very less time. So this is the best recipe for your kid’s lunch box especially when you are in a hurry and thinking about what to pack.
I prefer to use organic powdered jaggery for this recipe for two reasons. One that organic powdered jaggery does not contain any dirt. Second, since it is powdered, it is easy to use.
